Villa

Volta

Volta is located on the island of Paxos, set within a lush, sloping landscape overlooking the Ionian Sea. The design draws from the traditional “volta”, a characteristic architectural element of the Ionian Islands, reinterpreted as a spatial and visual filter that frames the views and strengthens the connection between the house and its natural surroundings.

The residence is carefully positioned within a cleared area in response to the existing topography, preserving the stone terraces while maintaining unobstructed sea views. The main volume unfolds as a stone-built structure articulated by a series of arches, which define the main façade and create a sequence of semi-open spaces. These elements guide movement and frame selected views, while enhancing the transition between interior and exterior living.

The house is organized around an internal courtyard that acts as a core of light, ventilation, and privacy, separating the common areas from the more intimate spaces. Large openings allow for a seamless flow between inside and outside, extending the living experience towards shaded outdoor areas and the landscape beyond.

A secondary volume, lighter in expression, sits above the main stone base, while outdoor spaces unfold across the natural slope of the terrain. The swimming pool, placed on a lower level, visually merges with the sea, reinforcing the presence of water as a central element of the composition. A guesthouse, positioned further down the slope, remains independent while maintaining a strong relationship with the natural setting.

Natural materials such as local stone, timber, and traditional roof tiles are used to ensure a harmonious integration with the environment. Pergolas and the existing vegetation enhance the sense of living within the landscape, blurring the boundaries between built form and nature.

The proposal aims to reinterpret the local architectural identity through a contemporary approach, creating a living environment that is both rooted in its context and open to the surrounding landscape.
